Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) is a disease of bone marrow cells. It is a disorder in which the cells in the bone marrow don't function normally and not enough normal blood cells are produced, which caused anemia. Luo Yuanlan's myelodysplastic syndrome is very severe, it does not respond to medication very well. He needs to receive a stem cell (bone marrow) transplant to replace the unhealthy bone marrow cells with healthy ones that can produce normal blood cells. Stem cell transplant costs about $60,000 in China. Both of his parents are retired. They used all their savings to send me to college and have nothing left.
